Following the Salzach upstream from Salzburg we reach Werfen village where you can see the Ice Giant Ice Caves and a majestic Werfen Fortress perched on a Rock – with the beautiful Austrian scenery of Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut Lake District.
Amazing Ice Caves “Eisriesenwelt” (literally: Ice Giant World) is one of the top destinations for sightseeing in Salzburg province. With its huge halls, narrow accesses, icy sculptures of gigantic size, ice curtains, corridors, crevices and light effects; the ice caves are unique in all respects. Although photography is not permitted in the cave, to walk the mountain path to the cave entrance is extremely photogenic with stunning views of rocky mountains in all directions, giving an overpowering bond with nature.
As the temperature in the Ice Cave throughout the year is below freezing, proper walking shoes, warm clothes and gloves are advisable, within the ice caves there are steps to climb and descend. The experience of this miracle of nature will reward the effort; however, persons with serious walking difficulties or heart-circulation-problems are advised not to enter the caves. The Ice Caves is not suitable for small children,

It provides you with a great view far into the valley which in olden days gave it the status of a strategic bulwark. Due to its beauty and the extraordinary location this fortress was used as a set for movies (eg Where Eagles Dare).
On the way to Hallstatt we climb the Lammer valley passing through the famous hiking and ski resorts Abtenau, Russbach, through the Gschütt Pass at 957m and past Gosau, you will enjoy the beautiful landscapes and spectacular views of rocky mountains.

Some visiters say it is the most beautiful lake village in the world. Over 7000 years of salt mining and the findings of eminent historic import even gave a scientific epoch its name: The “Hallstatt period” with the “Hallstatt Culture”.
