St.Gilgen & St.Wolfgang

We head east from Salzburg and already we have typical rural scenery, with farmland and farmhouses, and hills around us. Our first lake is the Fuschlsee renowned for its clear waters. At the west end is the 14th century hunting lodge now operating as the luxury Hotel Schloss Fuschl. At the east end by the village of Fuschl are the offices of the energy drink company Red Bull with distinctive modern architecture. Just minutes later we take in the first view of the lake Wolfgangsee. Beneath us the village of St Gilgen, Mozart’s mother’s home town at the west end of the lake. To the north of the lake is Mount Schafberg, to the south we see Mount Zwolferhorn. We take a short visit in St Gilgen especially to see Mozart’s Mother’s Birth House, the central village square named after Mozart and the church and cemetery, by the lakeside there are great views across the lake. On the far side a short visit to St Wolfgang with its old pilgrimage church from the legend of the Bishop Wolfgang and the White Horse Inn.(Choice for coffee break). In St.Wolfgang most guests like to wander and explore in the village, including a visit to the old church. Due to its lakeside location some like to lunch on fish from the lake. With these thoughts in mind we arrange the routing to your needs. From St Wolfgang we take a lovely countryside route to Bad Ischl.

Bad Ischl “Kaiser Stadt”

Bad Ischl is an old spa town with well developed infrastructure for entertaining the health orientated classes. It is well known for theatre and opera, restaurants and cafes, in addition to the health treatments. The Emperor Franz Josef and his wife Elisabeth (Sissy) spent their summers here at the Kaiser Villa. By taking the Lakes and Mountains Tour with an extension to include Bad Ischl you can really feel you have got to know the heart of the Salzkammergut, Austria’s Lake District.

With the highlights of Bad Ischl, St.Wolfgang and Mondsee at Salzkammergut we have to consider interests and priorities, and adjust our approach accordingly. For some the attraction of Bad Ischl is the Kaiser Villa, to take the tour of the historically most important rooms. In winter only possible by advance appointment. Others prefer to take a stroll around town and drop by the Cafe Zauner for a tea or coffee with cake. We are not talking of just cake, we’re talking of an experience. The Zauner has a huge buffet selection of cakes, all produced in-house!

Mondsee (“The Sound of Music” wedding church)

From Bad Ischl we go on to Mondsee, first the lake then the village and visiting St.Michael’s church (“The Sound of Music“ wedding location). After spending some time at Mondsee you will arrive back in Salzburg saturated with your memories of the Salzkammergut.
