This tour takes you into the region of Pongau to the south of Salzburg. Sitting above the river Salzach by the little village of Werfen is the castle Festung Hohenwerfen. Above this majestic fortress high in the cliffs of the mountain is the largest known ice cave system in the world, the Werfen Ice Caves, also known as Eisriesenwelt. This tour gives you them both.
The Werfen Ice Caves were first discovered in 1879 – just the first hundred metres – the main explorations from 1920 onwards revealed a cave system over 40km in length, which soon attracted the first tourists. With its huge halls, narrow accesses, icy sculptures of gigantic size, small ice curtains, corridors, crevices and light effects; the Ice Caves are unique in all respects.
As the temperature remains below freezing, proper shoes, warm clothes and gloves are necessary. Please also take note that within the Ice Caves you have to go up and down 134m. Of course, the views on the way to reach the cave entrance give some great scenic photo opportunities. The experience of this Miracle of Nature will reward the effort; however, persons with serious walking difficulties or heart and circulation problems are asked not to enter the caves. It is also not suitable for small children.
Dating from the 11th century, the fortress Hohenwerfen will give you a great view far into the valley which in old days made it important for defence. Because of its beauty and the extraordinary location this fortress was used as a set for movies (eg the 1968 film “Where Eagles Dare”). Today it houses weapons, various special exhibitions, the first Austrian Falconry Museum (a historic Falconry Centre with daily flight demonstrations), and a cafe for refreshments. The audio guided tour lasts less than an hour and gives access to the most dramatic parts of the castle, your chance to investigate the mighty walls of the castle from within. Some guests particularly enjoy the falconry show.
If you want to experience a miracle of nature and immerse yourself in history – this tour will provide it. You have the combination of the Ice Caves and the Medieval Castle: both will give you the air of adventure and stunning scenery.
