Itinerary

  • A perfect day trip from Salzburg to Vienna on the way optional visit to Melk Abbey is located picturesquely on a hill overlooking the Danube valley, and dwarfs its town. The options at the Melk Abbey vary from full tour to just a photo stop. The full tour requires booking in advance. We will drive through charming old villages beside the Danube such as Spitz and Weissenkirchen and, of course, you will get the opportunity to try the delicious local wines and cooking. You can visit a traditional winery, such as the 13th century award winning Mauritiushof. The village of Durnstein where King Richard I of England, Richard the Lion Heart, was imprisoned in the 13th century, is a great stop for lunch as well.

  • In Vienna you can immerse yourself in unique ensemble of a former empire’s grandeur and meeting point of cultures: In Vienna first visit will be at the Royal Palace of Schönbrunn. This palace with its elaborate park and the old zoo are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From there we head for the old city centre Innere Stadt district with the Stephansdom Cathedral surrounded by the Ringstrasse ring road, one of Vienna’s main sights. The Ringstrasse replaced the former medieval city walls and was intended to show the glory and grandeur of the Habsburg Empire. These now world famous Ringstrassen buildings even had an architectural style named after them: the Ringstrasse Style. “What is this palace? It’s a museum!” – so many buildings look as if they are important palaces, as well as statues of outstanding historic personalities such as the Empress Maria Theresa. You will see the Museum of Applied Arts, the Vienna State Opera House, the Museum of Art History, the Museum of Natural History, the Hofburg Imperial Palace, the Spanish Horse Riding School, the Parliament, the Burgtheater (National Theatre), the Town Hall, the Votive Church, the Württemberg Palace (now Hotel Imperial), Belvedere Palace  and many other monumental buildings. For many the mention of Vienna brings to mind the Blue Danube, the waltz by the Austrian composer Strauss and the river that passes through Vienna, and is not blue!

  • During Vienna sightseeing may choose to enjoy the delicacies of a Viennese Café and a little Viennese cuisine. On the classic tour we will then return to Salzburg. On request it can be customized so the tour could end at your choice of location in Vienna.

  • On our way back to Salzburg we can discuss the sights seen and reflect upon Imperial Vienna.
