The perfect day trip from Vienna to get to know Salzburg and cover many beautiful places and UNESCO sites of Austria. Salzburg is a small Baroque city with its 11th century fortress towering over the old town, the birthplace of the composer W.A.Mozart, host to Music Festivals and source of the story that lead to the film locations of “The Sound of Music”. We also explore one of Austria’s most beautiful region lake and mountains at Salzkammergut.
In the morning our journey begins through the beautiful countryside, after an hour we take in landmark views of Melk Abbey, another hour we see a distinctive rock in the distance, the Traunstein, we are reaching the “Salzkammergut”. It is one of the most dramatic and beautiful sightseeing destinations in Austria. Important attractions are the lakes Mondsee, Wolfgangsee and Fuschlsee.
We make our first stop at the charming lakeside village Mondsee with its colourful high street. Here we will visit the 8th century Mondsee Basilica, it was also used as a location of the wedding scene in the famous movie “The Sound of Music”. After having some leisure time at Mondsee we ride along the lakeside over the pass and down to our next lake, the heart of the lake district St.Gilgen am Wolfgangsee.
St.Gilgen is the village where Mozart’s mother was born. It is also film location of the “The Sound of Music”. The highlight is to spend some time at high view point above the village for taking photos of breathtaking scenery around lake “Wolfgangsee”. It is also a good place for taking a lunch break.
After lunch we head to historical city Salzburg, along the way we will see the impressive architectural office building of “Red Bull” and the 15th century Schloss Fuschl, both are located by the cleanest lake in Austria, the Fuschlsee.
Finally, we reach Salzburg. Before visiting the Baroque old part of the city, we first cover the outer circle of Salzburg beginning with “The Sound of Music” film locations: Hellbrunn and Leopoldskron palaces, Nonnberg Abbey, Mirabel Gardens and Mozart Residence, depend on your interests we can also visit the Hangar 7.
Final part of the tour you will get some time at leisure to explore the Baroque part of Salzburg on your own. where you can walk and discover the very heart of the old city’s beauty and magnificence.
The highlights are within very close walking distances, let us name some of the most important ones: Mozart’s Birthplace – the Festival Halls – Franciscan Church – St. Peter’s Church, Monastery and cemetery – Salzburg Cathedral – Fortress “Hohensalzburg” – Residence Square with its Fountain – Bishop’s Old and New Residence Palaces with Salzburg’s Carillon – Mozart Square with the Mozart Statue – the Old Market Square.
