Your full day trip from Vienna to beautiful Baroque City Salzburg with its history of music, Mozart and the source of the story that became the famous 1960s movie “The Sound of Music” and its movie locations. On the way we show you the one of Austria’s UNESCO World Heritage landscape Wachau Valley with its historic villages with a picturesque vineyards 40km along the Blue Danube is one of the Europe’s most enchanting riverside scenic routes.
We begin with avoiding a section of the motorway allowing us to show off the “Wachau Valley” a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. We make a coffee break at Dürrnstein village, High above Dürrnstein village up on the hill overlooking the village the stand-alone castle ruins where the English King Richard I also called Richard the Lionheart was held captive by Leopold V, Duke of Austria. We drive along the Danube river up to the ancient wine grower’s village Spitz which is in the heart of the Wachau Valley. The baroque squareand uneven cobblestone streets are part of the natural beauty of the village. On request we can visit the one of the wine cellars for wine tasting.
We will take in great views of the Melk Abbey, one of the biggest and most beautiful Baroque ensembles. Its splendid architecture is famous worldwide and part of UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage.
Just before reaching Salzburg, we visit St.Michael’s church of Mondsee where the “The Sound of Music” movie wedding scene was filmed. The colourful lakeside village Mondsee could be a choice for a lunch break.
After lunch we head to the historic city of Salzburg. We cover the following attractions by minivan Hellbrunn Palace, Leopoldskron Palace, Nonnberg Abbey, Mirabell Gardens, Horse Wash Pond are some of the “The Sound of Music” film locations. On request we can also visit Hangar 7.
Then it’s your chance for some time at leisure to discover the baroque old town on your own. The highlights are located within very close walking distances, let us name some of the most important ones: Mozart’s Birthplace and Residence – Greater Festival Hall, “House for Mozart” and Rock Riding School Festival Hall – Franciscan Church – St. Peter’s Church, Monastery and Cemetery – Salzburg Cathedral and the Cathedral Square – Chapter Square with its fountain – Fortress “Hohensalzburg” – Residence Square with its fountain – Old and New Residence palaces – Salzburg’s Carillon – Mozart Square with his statue – Old Market Square.
In the late afternoon we head back to Vienna with unforgettable memories.
