A PERFECT DAY TRIP takes you to the “Fab Four”! Combining history and nature. Salzburg is the “Salt Castle” and its river Salzach “Salt River” which used to bring the salt from the mines in the mountains. Following the Salzach upstream we have historic Salt Mines, spectacular Golling Waterfalls, the Ice Giant Ice Caves and a majestic Werfen Fortress perched on a Rock – with the beautiful Austrian scenery.
The grandeur of Eisriesenwelt (literally: Ice Giant World) a cave system over 40 km in length, only the first km accessible for tourists is one of the top destinations for sightseeing in Salzburg province. With its huge halls, narrow accesses, icy sculptures of gigantic size, ice curtains, corridors, crevices and light effects; the ice caves are unique in all respects. Even the hike on the mountain path to reach the cave entrance is extremely photogenic with stunning views of rock in all directions, giving an overpowering bond with nature.
As the temperature in the Ice Cave throughout the year is below freezing, proper walking shoes, warm clothes and gloves are advisable, within the ice caves there are steps to climb and descend. The experience of this miracle of nature will reward the effort; however, persons with serious walking difficulties or heart-circulation-problems are advised not to enter the caves. The Ice Caves is not suitable for small children.
In the valley of the Salzach River, the majestic fortress Hohenwerfen stands out on high on the rock, dating back to the 11th century. It provides you with a great view far into the valley which in olden days gave it the status of a strategic bulwark. Due to its beauty and the extraordinary location this fortress was used as a set for movies (eg Where Eagles Dare). Thereis a 50 minute castle tour and if the timing is right a falconry display.
Amazing nature in the “Tennengau” region of Salzburg province. The Golling Waterfalls are one of the Austria’s most spectacular falls. Surrounded by rock they are beside the charming little Tennengau town of Golling. Accessable by a few minutes walk from the car park.
One of the world’s oldest Salt Mine accessible for visitors at Bad Dürrnberg. The “white gold” mined from the rock there played a crucial role in the history of Salzburg and far beyond. Donning a traditional miner’s costume, riding a miner’s underground train and sliding down smoothly polished wooden slides you will go down level by level and enter not only the mysteries of a world far inside the mountain. You will also travel back in time to previous ages. A highlight will be the raft trip across the subterranean salt lake. — Salt mines children under 4 years are not admissible.
So we have a busy but satisfying day with Ice, Rock, Water and Salt. All four in one day.
