On this tour you will have a chance to appreciate the beauty of the Salzkammergut, the Austrian Lake District – lakes, mountains, rock faces, little villages and rural scenery. This area around Salzburg was and is setting for world famous movies (eg “The Sound of Music”) and operettas (eg The White Horse Inn). It is one of Austria’s most beautiful regions. It is possible to crown the tour with a ride up Mount Schafberg.

Itinerary

From Salzburg we head east soon reaching our first lake, the Fuschlsee, passing by the old hunting lodge Schloss Fuschl, operating today as a luxury hotel, we then pass the architecturally impressive offices of the energy drink company, Red Bull, beside the village of Fuschl. We climb the next pass and high above St. Gilgen, where W.A. Mozart’s mother was born and his sister lived during her marriage, we will have a photo stop. You will be impressed by the incredible view over the lake Wolfgangsee, the surrounding mountains and rock faces. In fine weather we would even see the church tower of St Wolfgang in the distance. The road takes the south side of the lake. The boat takes you along the north shores of the lake at the foot of the Schafberg mountain.
Mount Schafberg
This mountain with its distinctive vertical north face and sloping south side is quite a landmark and visible from afar. From St Gilgen we get a closer view. The 6 km ride up 1200m on the old cog-wheel mountain railway built in 1893, is an experience itself. Within about 40 minutes you will reach the top station just beneath the summit of the mountain (1783 m) where you can check out the views and take refreshments. From the mountain summit you can have the most magnificent 360° panoramic view not only down to the lakes of the Salzkammergut but also many peaks near and far even a glacier,. Especially with fine weather this is a tour you should not miss!
Depending on the boat schedule and other prevailing conditions, we would send you across the lake by boat one way, and by road for the return. Whether boat or road, you can sit back and indulge in the wonderful scenery along the lake to the beautiful village of St. Wolfgang. After your Mount Shafberg experience you can visit the church of St.Wolfgang with its original chapel and bazaar altar configuration and listen to the legend of the Bishop Wolfgang. This old village and its unique atmosphere are to be explored and enjoyed.
From the Wolfgangsee after passing the hamlet Winkl, the Castle Hüttenstein and the picturesque small lake Krottensee we will drive north along the west shores of Mondsee lake to reach the Mondsee village..Here you will have a chance to visit St.Michael’s Church of Mondsee which is “The Sound of Music” wedding scene location or try the traditional Apple Strudel at a café on the quaint high street. Then we return to Salzburg, full of impressions from this outstanding part of Austria, the Salzkammergut.
