You would not believe the beauty of the “South Tyrol” range of Alps in Northern Italy! And how near to Innsbruck! The South Tyrol, UNESCO World Heritage site comprises of a mountain range with exceptional landscapes. Innsbruck gives easy access to Northern Italy with the Brenner Pass. You will tour the region of South Tyrol (Alto Adige in Italian) that used to be a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918. The Dolomite Alpine range with its stunning scenery.
Leaving from Innsbruck with the highway we soon cross the Bridge of Europe, a section of highway where we are crossing the Wipp valley. The bridge is 777m long and 192m high over the river Sill and is popular for Bungee jumping. We climb steadily crossing the Brenner Pass at 1370m into Italy. South Tyrolean villages, valleys, mountains with stunning rock faces. The South Tyrolean unique wine villages along the wine road with over 180 Castles and thousands of hectares of land with vineyards and apple plantations all the way to South Tyrol’s state capital Bozen / Bolzano. A must visit destination in Italy!
After the border we make our first stop at the medieval village Sterzing (Vipiteno in Italian). This former Silver mining center brought the wealth for this town. It used to be residence for Roman Empires and Kings. Vipiteno is of the most beautiful towns in Italy with its colourful buildings, facades and long town street brings the Mediterranean atmosphere.
Bolzano has much to see, taste the delicious authentic Bolzano flavors and experience the Mediterranean culture. With time for lunch and to explore the city. Some may like to make a visit to the archeological museum to see the 5300 years old body of the “ICE MAN” with his original clothes and his belongings. His name is Ötzl, Bolzano museum is his home since 1998.
On our return round trip, we will make a short visit to Brixen, South Tyrol’s oldest medieval town. The highlight is to explore pretty old narrow streets of the medieval old town and discover the treasures of Bressanone Cathedral.
On our route we still enjoy the the scenery, the historic Castle views and vineyards in South Tyrol’s picturesque valleys all the way back to Innsbruck.
